Harlem reminds me of my childhood neighborhood near the Porte de Vanves in Paris. I left one day because I had to, but I always return with a touch of nostalgia. The writer James Baldwin also had to leave Harlem for other reasons. Weary of the racial and homophobic undertones, he sought refuge in France and died in Saint-Paul-de-Vence. How many memories are held in these streets, avenues, churches, bars, and blocks of Harlem? Memories captured on paper in a book: Harlem Quartet. Unforgettable.
